Tile making process.

A quick overview…

All our architectural ceramics are made individually, by hand. First we draw up a shape and make sure it tessellates nicely so it will work as a repeated form.

Then we make it out of clay, and cast a plaster mould from it.

After waiting for at least a month for this to dry, its ready to press clay into and pop out the shape. We make a few of these to check for ease of removal, weight, awkward areas and leave them out to dry on a flat surface for 1 - 3 days.

The tiles are tidied on the edges, checked for imperfections and stacked to dry completely.

Once completely dry (1-4 weeks) they are fired to 950 degress Celsius in a bisque firing over 3 days.

Once removed they are glazed in one or more glazes using a combination of application techniques to create different effects and put back in the kiln to 1200 degress celcius - firing over 3 days again.

Once cool, they are taken out, inspected and ready for you to install!

Considerations

As each tile IS made by hand and glazed by hand you must expect a high degree of variation in your final surface. Of course, that’s why you’re here, not at a mega store - the final effect is a real showstopper moment in your room - everyone is drawn in by the gorgeous surfaces that press moulded hand glazed tiles produce.

In addition, the process is not a quick one. We require lead times of 2-4 months depending on the scope of your project. Get in touch at the beginning of your build or renovation! We do endeavor to keep unglazed shapes in stock - if these are available our turnaround time can be as short as a week.

However if you’re wanting custom shapes and colours add at least a month to your lead time as we will undoubtedly go back and forth getting it right.
